Every time I’m out fishing with the other guys and take a good look at them and then a good look at myself, i have to think of Asian sweat-shop clothing manufacturers. Waders, wading shoes, wading jackets, wading vests, baseball caps – a matching set. We look like we’ve been stamped out of a stencil in matching functional but boring togs. The only variations are the factory labels and sizes. Personal style for fishing? No way!

But now Haute Couture has hit the water in a one-man crusade to turn the stream into a fashion runway: Steve Edge! Subdued colours, inconspicuously creeping up on your fishy prey by blending into the background – not for this London designer who dubs himself “Prophet, Madman, Wanderer”.(www.steve-edge.com)

When Steve strides along the river bank, you can be sure he is clad in the finest materials, in eye-catching colours, and all of it well tailored. Whether the fish take one look at him and fall into a paralysis of shock and bite at anything that floats by, well that remains to be seen. But one thing’s for sure: This nattily attired man does catch fish, and even when they are not biting he isn’t afraid to hook up on bolides.

We’d love to spend a week with Steve in a fishing lodge at some salmon water – if only to see what he gets togged up in at the end of a long day of angling, when the rest of us are lounging in baggy longjohns around a steaming pasta casserole…

There are fly fishing magazines and then there are fly fishing magazines. Looking good. A truly awesome ensemble, but why the oh so drab fishing bag?
